‘Avid reader’ you write on your CV. This opens up the opportunity for all interviewers you meet to ask you what you are currently reading. You would be shocked at the number of candidates who are apparently ‘avid readers’ but haven’t read a full length book since school or university.

In the age of Candy Crush and Instagram so many people have moved away from reading for fun but there are huge benefits to reading whether in paper, kindle, tablet or even on your smartphone!

It has been said that you cannot fully understand the English language or indeed Western culture until you have read the Western Canon. I disagree because firstly, who is to determine what a full or partial understanding of a culture is and secondly, there are potentially hundreds of these books, few of us have the luxury of time to actually sit down and read them.

Here are the books the Aldrich team are currently reading:

Georgia: The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard

Emily: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Giles Milton

Digby: Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus

Kate: Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Amy: Much ado about nothing by William Shakespeare

Charlie: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Jonathan: Anna Karenina: Tolstoy

Therese: Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier

Eva: The Choice by Edit Eger

Claire: Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

Hugo: The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli

Alex Unconquered the Story of Kent and its Lieutenancy by David McDine
